Happy Daylight Savings Time!

Today is my 8th  slice for the
March Slice of Life Challenge

Did you know that Daylight Savings Time was originally thought of "..in a moment of whimsey..." by Benjamin Franklin in 1784? Benjamin Franklin's idea, which started as a joke, has given us more time. It's been part of our country since 1918...and I am grateful!

There's something about sunshine. It lifts my mood and makes me smile.
Taken the day BEFORE daylight savings time at 5:22pm.

DST is more than sunshine though...it's time. Life feels less hustled and stressed when there are more hours in the day. "I wish I had more time!" That's something that I hear and I say often. Let's stop for a moment and appreciate this gift that's given to us today. We want more time. It's HERE. Today. The gift of more time.
Happy Daylight Savings Time!!!

Celebrate today as a holiday! It's a wish come true. You want more time?!?! Here it is! Thanks Benjamin Franklin!

  2. I second Anita's comment! I also love how you've made your post a quick research opportunity and wove together the pictures to get us to agree. I will think of your post when I'm a little draggish later today. Thank you!

  3. Here I sit bleary eyed from not enough sleep and you, my friend, wake me up with your ever present cheerfulness. Gotta love you! And this day.

  4. It is amazing how much I notice that my outlook changes on this day that we gain one more hour of sunlight! It truly feels like spring has arrived now. YAY!!

  5. I'm with you Michelle! That daylight brings on a whole new mood, doesn't it? Thanks for the reminder to help us move from complaint to commitment to the "life is good" philosophy.

  6. I love your perspective on DLS. Spring seems closer and we do have more time I would rather it take place on Saturday to give me an extra day to catch up on sleep before the start of the week.

  7. Sun is shining in Kentucky! I woke up at 5:30, then slept a couple more hours. I don't feel like I've missed anything!

  9. Ben Franklin!? What a guy! And you, seeing the golden opportunity in what I initially saw as a lost hour. Thank you my friend for turning me around.

  10. I always feel that I get more accomplished when the sun is still shining at 6 or 7 o'clock. When it;s dark at four I'm ready for bed by eight

  11. I learned something new today! I can't say I enjoy your enthusiasm for Daylight Savings Time though. Our time was perfect until they started playing with a couple of years ago. We didn't have DST then and I have to say I liked it better. Will be anxious to see how our kids react tomorrow.

  12. I did know the Ben Franklin proposed Daylight Savings Time, but I also know it's a holdover from a time when agricultural needs justified the time change. That's when farmers didn't have air-conditioned equipment w/ high-beam headlights. I'm not a fan of DST; it wrecks havoc w/ my circadian rhythms; it means I have to get up in the dark; and here in the west it means that during the summer months we won't get a glimpse of night until 10:00 p.m. There are still only 24 hours in the day; they're just distributed differently!

  13. Your positivity inspires me again...yes, we gained something today, and I will now stop complaining. :)

  14. Again, here I am at your blog and I'm inspired by your positive outlook on what we have. Thanks! (Tips over from being up all day.)

  15. I LOVE that it stays lighter later into the evening. It definitely seems to add hours to the day. Yay spring!

Whatever Happened To...

Sharing this post on Two Writing Teachers Slice of Life Do you ever wonder whatever happened to your students after the year you spend together? I imagine how my students are finding life...are they happy? Successful? Do they still read? Write? What is going on with them?   I taught fifth grade for eight years. Fifth grade was such a fun year to teach because the students were still young enough that school was something they loved and old enough that they could show some real signs of independence. Fifth grade is the oldest grade in our elementary schools, so the students enjoyed their final year before moving onto middle school and the challenges that came with that new adventure.  2007 was a tough year for me personally. My dad collapsed in September of that year and then died in March of that same school year. He lived thousands of miles away, so my mind was definitely unfocused that year...but that year, Catie was in my class.  Catie was a quiet stude...

Chasing My Dream

I'm doing it. I'm chasing my dream. I've always wanted to run writing retreats and workshops for people, but I've always been too scared to do anything about it...until now. I don't know what's changed...maybe I've changed. I'm not allowing the fear to stop me anymore. I've started Selah Writing Retreats.  The past couple of weeks I've been getting the business end in order. I thought I would hate that...I don't. It's scary, but I am surprising myself with how efficient I am. Yesterday I went to a bank to set up a bank account. The woman I met with was kind and helpful and so enthusiastic about my dream. My website is set up. I've done lots of work on it. I hope you stop by and let me know what you think. It's  selahwritingretreats.com . Balancing creative with business has been challenging but fun. Creating the website, getting a federal tax id, making business cards, planning dates... My favorite voxer group is called Butt Ki...

Saying Goodbye

Thank you to Stacey, Betsy, Dana, Tara, Beth, & Anna for this amazing platform to write and share writing! What a wonderful community you've created! I'm honored to be part of it. Join us at  Two Writing Teachers .  Today is the last day of sixth grade. My students will leave this classroom and they will magically turn into seventh graders. I am sad. We have to say goodbye. Goodbye to our time together. It turns out...I'm not good at saying goodbye. Emotions overwhelm me and I pull back...I want to be strong for them. Today I want to BE in the moment as much as possible. I want to talk with my students and remember our good times together. I want to pay attention to the final moments of our community. We created strong communities this year and we took care of each other.  They are ready. Summer is waiting. Seventh grade is waiting. They have written and read and created and communicated and grown every single day. I'm proud of each of my students. I ...
