It's a Party!

Leigh Anne Eck from A Day in the Life blog is throwing a party. She's invited slicers here. This is a great way to connect with our community of slicers so today I'm RSVPing yes. 

This is what I am bringing to the party:

Favorite book:  Too many to pick just one...Anne of Green Gables is my all-time favorite, Intention is my current favorite professional book, and Word Collector is my current favorite picture book. 

Favorite person:  I'd bring my friend Chrissy. She's an amazing teacher and a beacon of light. We get to work in the same school this year and it's amazing. She's always fun at a party and I know you'd all love her!

Favorite food or beverage:  Since it's March, almost April, I'm obsessed with Cadbury Mini-Eggs. Mmmmm! I'll bring my favorite pasta dish too...spaghetti with anchovies. It's comfort food for me. 

Favorite song:  Last week, I asked my students to share songs that made them happy. I'm going to share a song that was shared with me: Believer by Imagine Dragons. It's catchy, positive, and fun! I think it's a good party song. 

Surprise: I'd bring each of you some happy, colorful school supplies...pens, pencils, binder clips. School supplies make me happy.

    I love your book and surprise! Not sure I could eat the spaghetti or mini-eggs as I am pretty picky. Your sister sounds fabulous! I had never heard that song, so I looked it up. AMAZING! I am going to play it tomorrow in my classroom. Thanks!

Sharing this post on Two Writing Teachers Slice of Life Do you ever wonder whatever happened to your students after the year you spend together? I imagine how my students are finding life...are they happy? Successful? Do they still read? Write? What is going on with them?   I taught fifth grade for eight years. Fifth grade was such a fun year to teach because the students were still young enough that school was something they loved and old enough that they could show some real signs of independence. Fifth grade is the oldest grade in our elementary schools, so the students enjoyed their final year before moving onto middle school and the challenges that came with that new adventure.  2007 was a tough year for me personally. My dad collapsed in September of that year and then died in March of that same school year. Storms

Last night there was a thunderstorm. It was loud. It was bright. The rain was pouring from the sky. Everything stopped. I sat in bed with all of the blinds opened and watched the flashing lightning paint the sky over and over and over again. The thunder boomed and my poor Bella ran under the bed. The rain poured and poured and poured.  I thought about how cleansing a storm can be. While it's happening, it can be scary...just ask my dog...but after it's over, I wake up and feel renewed. Maybe we need to storm sometimes too. Let it all out and see what's left and how it feels. I storm...on the pages my notebook. When I'm frustrated or worried or ecstatic, I open the pages and let it all out. The emotions paint the pages of my notebook...it's all left there. And after, I feel renewed. I breathe more deeply, think more clearly, and feel better. Without thunderstorms, what would spring be? Without writing, who would I be?  I have always been deeply connected to th...

I Love Me...All of Me

I'm fat. It's true. I'm not looking for comments like, "Oh you're not fat." I am. I want to take that word back. When we say that now, it has a negative connotation. I'm tired of that. I'm done. I'm fat. I'm working on loving my body just the way it is...by reading a book. I confess I'm reading the book on my Kindle app because I was embarrassed about the title. It's called, "Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls" and it's written by Jes Baker . Her mission is self-love...for all. I've highlighted so many lines, I can't possibly share them all, but here are some of my favorites: "Our bodies are our physical bookmarks that hold space for us in the world.
