Poetry Friday: FLYing With Words
Poetry Friday is being hosted by Tabatha Yeatts at The Opposite Indifference. Please join us!
The first book I read this year was Nikki Grimes book Word With Wings. A book filled with lovely poems about a girl named Gabby. This poem is one of my favorites from that book because it speaks of my OLW and words. Here's a photo of it from the back cover...
The images of words flying and holding and carrying and tickling take my breath away! I love the lines, "...other words have wings/ that wake my daydreams. They fly in, silent as sunrise..."
I can see the words hovering and coasting in the morning sky above me. I can see the words nudging my dreams awake. I can hear the silence of the words as they works.
Oh...the beauty of this poem! Poetry gives me the opportunity to look at things I love in a new way. Nikki Grimes accomplished this with the poems in this book. Words with Wings carried me away to a place I'd been before but I'd never really seen. Thank you!
Michelle, in the wee hours of the morning, this poem is a refreshing look at the power of words that swish in our minds and land in our hearts. Nikki Grimes' words did that for me today. I am hoping that you are considering writing your own poem about the words that fly for the Winter Whisperings Gallery.
ReplyDeleteHooray for "words with wings!" Wishing you a high FLYing year!
ReplyDeleteWords with wings, indeed - here's to flights like this!
ReplyDeleteI am fascinated to see the way people's OLW turns up in their lives! Thank you for sharing this. Have you read "Feelings About Words" by Mary O'Neill? There are flying words in that one, too. :-)
ReplyDeleteI will be looking for Words With Wings - it is a title I haven't read yet. Thanks for highlighting this book and for sharing your OWL - you are cleared for takeoff! =)
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful word for the year. Wishing you flights of wonder.
ReplyDeleteI love the images of words flying in to "carry my thoughts away." Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteOh wow, 'buckle up for the ride' is fun! The places where poetry takes us indeed. :)
