Small Moments

Thank you to Stacey, Betsy, Dana, Tara, Beth, Anna, Kathleen & Deb for this amazing platform to write and share writing! What a wonderful community you've created! I'm honored to be part of it. Join us at Two Writing Teachers

I woke up at 7:30 today. I slept through the night, didn't wake up at all until 7:30 this morning. That usually doesn't happen. I'm awake around five a.m. every morning and most nights I wake up a couple of times. Last night was filled with restful sleep. I find myself wanting a reason for this night of restful sleep, and then I can replicate it. Instead, I'll enjoy it.

Yesterday I met a friend for lunch. It was one of those lunches...we met at noon and we were still there talking after three o'clock. We used to work together and she left to open a new school and life got in the way for both of us. I missed our friendship so much. I missed our talks and laughing and how much we had in common...like our school supply addiction. That led us to stopping my Joanne's to look for washi tape to decorate our planners. We both have the Academic Passion Planners

A good night sleep. Yummy lunch with a good friend. Stickers & planners & washi tape...life is good. I'm reading a book, Simply Tuesday by Emily Freeman. It will be released on August 18th. It's about celebrating the ordinary as extraordinary in our lives...about being present for those "small" moments because our lives are a series of those small moments.

I once asked Stacey why we write our slices on Tuesdays. She cited this clip from Seinfeld...

Writing slices and reading slices helps me focus on those small moments, helps me stay present and really witness my life. For me, "Tuesdays have a feel," Tuesdays are what life is all about...

  1. You are right, there is something special about Tuesdays! I have not written as much lately, but there is never a Tuesday that does not go by without thinking about blogging or writing! So glad you were able to meet with an old friend. I will have that chance later this week (after 25 years!). Hopefully more about that next week!

  2. You are so right - and SO wise. I've been writing less but reading and reflecting more. Life is indeed about those small moments of connecting - in person and virtually - through the power of words. It's how we witness our lives. It's how we sustain our lives.

  3. Love your slice and celebrating the small moments. I can relate about sleep and wanting to replicate those restful nights. The book Simply Tuesday sounds great. Will look for it in late August.

  4. As always, such joy while reading your post! I love your passion planner. So glad you had the opportunity to catch up with a treasured friend and get enough rest.

  5. Michelle, I totally agree with cherishing the small moments in life! The small moments create the foundation of our lives and we need to recognize and embrace them for the treasures they are! Thanks for posting this today :)

  6. Stickers, planners and washi tape ARE the best! Feed your creative soul and the rest will fall into place.

  7. It's always fun to get together with someone who loves the same things, Michelle. Sounds as if it was a very good day. That book sounds great, too! I think I might have to find a bit more Washi tape!

  8. I have found that I miss Tuesdays when I don't get a chance to slice. Sometimes life just gets in the way, but I do miss it. Small moments are so important, especially like lunch with a friend or decorating planners! Have a great week.

  9. 12 hours of straight sleep? Wow! That's impressive, Michelle! (I could use that much rest right about now.)

BTW: She loved Bella in the video!

  10. I love those visits when you never run out of something to discuss and the laughter is continuous. I particularly like that you were grateful for friendship, stickers, planners, and washi tape - that pretty much says it all for your wonderful day. By the way, your Planner looks great and you've motivated me to write my Slice of Life later today

  11. As always you make me smile. That is one of your many gifts. I love the idea of Simply Tuesday, I just preordered it! That Passion Journal is tempting. You are such a notebook girl I can see you using it "passionately."

And ofcourse the connection to our Slicing. Just the ordinary -- good feeling!

  12. You must be settling into summer to have been able to sleep through the night! During the school year, I never sleep well, but right now, I'm making up for it!

  13. Michelle, like Leigh Anne, I miss Tuesdays when I don't write. It seems strange but today I am back from ILA15 and offering a post that I wrote before I took "FLIGHT." You have so many great tidbits in your slice today: sleep - a wonderful gift, washi tape (What is it?), friendship, a new book, and a new notebook. Love your thoughts today. They are perky and fun. When I wrote my poem, Flight, I thought of you. I hope you can take a look and let me know what you think. http://beyondliteracylink.blogspot.com/2015/07/positivity-undone-and-renewed.html

  14. I messed up. Usually I write my slice on Sunday or Monday then post on Tuesday. I didn't write. Now it's the middle of the day on Tuesday. I have a half written slice. I know it's not the end of the world. I know that I do this for myself mostly, but I wish I had stayed true to my commitment. I love how you are so dependable. I want to still have that virtual coffee hour. Let's do it soon because I start school in 2 weeks! Yikes!

  15. Your post is full of joy! I too LOVE school supplies and office supply stores! But like carol I am wondering what Washi tape is. Am I missing the next best thing next to sliced bread?

  16. Yes, we find ourselves in those small moments. And, we discover that they are not so small, after all.

  17. Michelle,
What a delightful Tuesday. It's interesting, I hadn't though much about Tuesdays. They're the day after Monday. I see Tuesday if I survived Monday. The weekend is still out of reach, but I love when you said that slowing down on Tuesdays helps "focus on those small moments, helps me stay present and really witness my life." Maybe I need to rethink my Tuesday attitude.

    Smiles,
    Cathy

Here I Am

I haven't posted in a couple of weeks. I've been thinking for the past couple of days about this post...but I can't think of anything to write. Frozen in my failure, I want to quit, but I push through and show up here...even though it seems pointless. Who wants to read a blog post about nothing?  I begin to panic a bit...Have I "lost it"? My passion for blogging? My ability to blog? Why can't I think of something clever? What do I have to say that anyone will want to read? (By the way, I'd have all of these answers if it was you asking the questions!) Should I quit? Give up? Accept defeat? NO.  Instead, I show up.  Instead, I remember the words I said yesterday to my seventh-graders,  "Show up. It gets easier." Instead, I write and show grace to myself. Instead, I remember that blogging is a muscle that I haven't stretched in a while and I need to warm up, I need to take some deep breaths. Here I am. Showing up to the page. I'...

Someday...

Thank you to Stacey, Betsy, Dana, Tara, Beth, Anna, Kathleen & Deb for this amazing platform to write and share writing! What a wonderful community you've created! I'm honored to be part of it. Join us at Two Writing Teachers . Do you have dreams? Kids are good at dreaming. I find many adults struggle with it. Speaking for myself, I get so caught up in the everyday drudgery of life, that dreams get nudged aside until they disappear.  It's important to have dreams. I've been writing about my dreams in my notebook and so I thought I'd share my dreams here... 1. Writing a book.  While I'd love to get a book published, my dream is to write a book...to complete the act of writing it.  I've started on this dream and it's hard and challenging and exciting and amazing.  2. Living at the beach.    I love the water, the waves, the ocean smell, the seafood, the sand...all of it! The Outer Banks is my favorite place in the...

Chasing My Dream

I'm doing it. I'm chasing my dream. I've always wanted to run writing retreats and workshops for people, but I've always been too scared to do anything about it...until now. I don't know what's changed...maybe I've changed. I'm not allowing the fear to stop me anymore. I've started Selah Writing Retreats.  The past couple of weeks I've been getting the business end in order. I thought I would hate that...I don't. It's scary, but I am surprising myself with how efficient I am. Yesterday I went to a bank to set up a bank account. The woman I met with was kind and helpful and so enthusiastic about my dream. My website is set up. I've done lots of work on it. I hope you stop by and let me know what you think. It's  selahwritingretreats.com . Balancing creative with business has been challenging but fun. Creating the website, getting a federal tax id, making business cards, planning dates... My favorite voxer group is called Butt Ki...
