Ebb and Flow of Writing

Thank you to Stacey, Betsy, Dana, Tara, Beth, Anna, Kathleen & Deb for this amazing platform to write and share writing! What a wonderful community you've created! I'm honored to be part of it. Join us at Two Writing Teachers.
Dear Writing,

I've missed you.
Been gone too long
All the excuses are there...
Too busy, work, family, friends
But it's not enough
I haven't made time for you
and I'm sorry.

When I avoid you,
I feel it.
Less.
Empty.
Voiceless.
Sad.

I need you!
Please forgive me.
It's just that you ask,
you demand EVERYTHING from me
and my resistance comes from
the fear that I didn't have enough to give

I don't care anymore!
Whether you're good or
you're bad... I need you in my life.

Recommitted. That's me:
4AM morning pages.
Working on my book.
Notebook writing. Blog writing.
Card writing.
Bullet journaling.

I'm back. I'm here to stay.
Ready to offer you everything
because the truth is
You. Are. Everything. Love,
Michelle

This poem speaks to my reluctance and struggle to sit down and write lately. It's inspired (the format is blatantly stolen) from the retirement poem that Kobe Bryant wrote and published yesterday. His words surprised me and moved me and inspired me. The other reason for this poem is a webinar, The Potency of Poetry, that I listened to last night between Donalyn Miller and Kwame Alexander. They talked about poetry for an hour. Here are some of my favorite lines from Kwame Alexander... "My goal is to make words cool and make words fun!" "I've seen poems dance!" "You don't dissect poetry. You dissect frogs." After listening to his passion for poetry, I woke up this morning inspired to return to it. Thanks for reading! I hope your day brings you poems that dance and words that are cool and fun!

  1. Dear Michelle,

    My page has been empty,
    a canvas of ideas
    not yet composed.
    I've missed your musings;
    your ideas;
    your passion.
so, you have arrived back here
    just in time.
    Write me.
I am ready to be written.
    Sincerely,
    Your Stories, Poems, Posts, Ideas

  2. I love your honesty and your commitment to being a better you. Writing every morning? Could I do that? You make me want to try. And then there's this way cool response from Kevin. He shows up in the most surprising places.

  3. Ok...this post from your words, to Kobe's words, to Kevin's words have brought me to tears and put a smile on my face all at the same time! You may have stopped writing but I know you didn't wander too far. Once writing has become part of your life, it just doesn't go away. "See" you Saturday!

  5. You remind me of the old saying, "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride." It sounds as if you're ready to stop wishing and get that BIC, back to writing, the thing you love. I love that you started with a poem, and now onward. Looking forward to hearing all about your time with the words, Michelle.

  6. Earlier this year I set a writing goal for myself. When I didn't manage to meet that goal, I simply gave up. Your words have reinspired me! Thank you!!

  7. I hear you, my friend, having just emerged from a writing vacuum. I love the joy and sense of purpose in your SOL - the perfect stance.

  8. You're speaking to my heart. My post on Monday was about how I am taking (learning from other blogs) and not reciprocating (by writing on my blog) This is perfect - thank you for your honesty.

  10. You're back, Michelle. How wonderful! I will definitely listen to the webinar between two fav authors that you suggested. How about a quick fall poem with one of your famous photos for Autumn's Palette Gallery? (maybe Bella playing in the leaves)

  11. Michelle,
So glad to hear your voice! I have missed you! I'm trying to write with Mary Lee and a couple of others that have joined us this month. Right now, I feel like if I don't have accountability of other writers, I just don't get the writing done. Not sure what that says about me as a writer, but it's true…

Whatever Happened To...

Sharing this post on Two Writing Teachers Slice of Life Do you ever wonder whatever happened to your students after the year you spend together? I imagine how my students are finding life...are they happy? Successful? Do they still read? Write? What is going on with them?   I taught fifth grade for eight years. Fifth grade was such a fun year to teach because the students were still young enough that school was something they loved and old enough that they could show some real signs of independence. Fifth grade is the oldest grade in our elementary schools, so the students enjoyed their final year before moving onto middle school and the challenges that came with that new adventure.  2007 was a tough year for me personally. My dad collapsed in September of that year and then died in March of that same school year. He lived thousands of miles away, so my mind was definitely unfocused that year...but that year, Catie was in my class.  Catie was a quiet stude...

Chasing My Dream

I'm doing it. I'm chasing my dream. I've always wanted to run writing retreats and workshops for people, but I've always been too scared to do anything about it...until now. I don't know what's changed...maybe I've changed. I'm not allowing the fear to stop me anymore. I've started Selah Writing Retreats.  The past couple of weeks I've been getting the business end in order. I thought I would hate that...I don't. It's scary, but I am surprising myself with how efficient I am. Yesterday I went to a bank to set up a bank account. The woman I met with was kind and helpful and so enthusiastic about my dream. My website is set up. I've done lots of work on it. I hope you stop by and let me know what you think. It's  selahwritingretreats.com . Balancing creative with business has been challenging but fun. Creating the website, getting a federal tax id, making business cards, planning dates... My favorite voxer group is called Butt Ki...

I Love Me...All of Me

I'm fat. It's true. I'm not looking for comments like, "Oh you're not fat." I am. I want to take that word back. When we say that now, it has a negative connotation. I'm tired of that. I'm done. I'm fat. I'm working on loving my body just the way it is...by reading a book. I confess I'm reading the book on my Kindle app because I was embarrassed about the title. It's called, "Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls" and it's written by Jes Baker . Her mission is self-love...for all. I've highlighted so many lines, I can't possibly share them all, but here are some of my favorites: "Our bodies are our physical bookmarks that hold space for us in the world. Our bodies are magnificent houses for everything else that we are. Our bodies are a part of us, just as our kindness, talents, and passion are a part of us." (p.10)  "Your size is irrelevant to your ability to find fulfillment, purpose, love, a se...
