What's Your Theme Song?
Music brings people together. Music makes memories. Here's my dream road trip...
My friend Holly wrote a blog post about theme songs. I loved it. I got lost in the music. Her post inspired this post. I texted my family and a few friends and asked them what song is their theme song. After much discussion, I got lots of good answers.
Josie & Jillian: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Cyndi Lauper
or this...
Kate: Brown Eyed Girl, Van Morrison
Mom: Imagine, John Lennon
Mary Jo: Stand By Me, Ben E. King
Natural Woman, Aretha Franklin
Mary Ann: Having a Party, Southside Johnny
Danielle: Ain't No Mountain High Enough,
Marvin Gaye & Tami Terrell
Love is All Around (Theme song for MTM)
Henry: Simple Man, Lynryd Skynyrd
Christine from Colorado: Guaranteed by Eddie Vedder
Jessica: Lean on Me, Bill Withers
Christine: Bless the Broken Road, Rascal Flatts
Jenny: The River, Garth Brooks Erin: Insane in the Membrane, Cypress Hill
Karen: Brown Eyed Girl, Van Morrison
Some of these answers fit perfectly, while others surprised me. Music tells a story. I find it fascinating which story people choose to tell with their song choice. By the way, that list represents a brand new playlist for me.
For my sister, I'd pick the Mary Tyler Moore theme song, "Love is All Around". As a toddler, she loved that song. I will forever think of her when I hear that song. "Imagine" for my mom...perfect choice. It's exactly what I would have picked for her. The music, the lyrics...they fit her perfectly.

What about my theme song? My all time theme song remains the amazing "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding.
The song begins with the sound of the ocean and talking about the early morning, sitting by the ocean. That's my favorite way to begin the day. This song transports me to a different place and I feel calm whenever I hear it.
Every year, I pick a word of the year. This year my word is RISE. There are a couple of songs that remind me of my word...

Oh yes…I second Imagine! Cool thought!
ReplyDeleteYay! I'm so glad you did a Theme Song Slice, too! Your ideas gave me ANOTHER idea for a post - ha! (Isn't it wonderful how a writing community works?) My new idea inspired by you - the songs I'd pick FOR family and friends! I like that you picked songs according to your OLW, too. It would be neat to make a playlist of others' theme songs. I love some of your people's picks: Imagine, Bless the Broken Road, The River, Lean on Me. Such great songs! One of the people who commented on my post said hers was I Hope you Dance by Lee Ann Womack, which I LOVE! So many songs,so little time. Ha! Oh, one other thing - the music teacher in our school does a theme song project with the fifth graders. They choose a song, make a poster, and write about why it's their theme song. Great project for kids!
ReplyDeleteMusic is such a memory maker! Each summer we have a pool song which is usually the one played over and over on the radio for that summer. I can go back quite a few years with these. But there are so many memories tied to music, that I don't know if a I have a theme song. I may have to think about this one for awhile.
ReplyDeleteWill definitely be doing this in the near future! I love music!
ReplyDeleteMy husband's and my song was "Side by Side" a very old song (do you know "we ain't got a barrel of money. . . " and we sang it often. My song is Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's "Over The Rainbow" I turn to his videos when I want to be lifted, although there is a bittersweet part too because he left us way too young. Love your post, Michelle. There are so many wonderful songs!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great thinking exercise. I'm not coming up with a theme song very quickly for myself, but I have a song that I would love to be the theme song for my daughter. It is I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack. I heard it on the radio this morning on the way to school and it always makes me think of my daughter and, well, makes me cry. I actually see Holly commented on the same song. It's true, it's real. Now I'm off to ask my hubby what he thinks his theme song is.
ReplyDeleteThis is great. I've been collecting slice forms -- or would they be sub-genres? I do a lot image loaded posts and like to stick in videos here and know many bloggers who regularly open with a music video. Cut telling a story with a series of music videos -- something else again. Mix that media!
ReplyDeleteMarking the stages of our lives by the music we associate with periods or events is something we all do. You could "compose" an autobiography assembline them.
Oooo, I love this! It has got me thinking. I will need to take a bit to figure out my theme song.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I just love those carpool karaoke videos, they are so amazingly funny. I also find that when I watch them each person singing in the car always seems so overjoyed and happy as they belt out some great songs.
