Photo Challenge

Over on Facebook and Instagram, there's a photo challenge going on. I love taking pictures and noticing things around me. It felt like it took forever for me to be challenged, but my friend, Jennifer, finally tagged me...

And so I began the challenge, here are my first six pictures...





One day at a time, I challenged my family. My sister and cousin jumped onto the challenge immediately. I love this picture! It's my sister's first stuffed animal and my niece's favorite stuffed animal sitting together...

My mom and one of my aunts really wanted to join in but didn't know how to make pictures black and white. Once they figured it out, they were off! Here are some of their photos...
 

My other aunt resisted because she had no idea what to do. Her actual words were, "You know I am incapable of this. What do I do?" With just a little help from me and my cousin, she started the challenge. I love seeing how others see the world and what they want to share. My Auntie Ann's photo made me howl! It's totally unexpected, a little gross, and so funny. That's why I wanted her to join us. Looking at the world through the lens of others is valuable. Here's her first picture...

    I've seen this challenge too. There are some really stunning photos coming up, and many of them make me wish for the backstory! I know that "no explanation" is part of the challenge, which I suppose encourages people to choose images that speak for themselves. But I like story. You've written a nice one about how you chose the people you'd challenge.

    Seven pictures is not necessarily easy to choose. How fun any challenge can be when the family joins in.

    I've loved seeing this challenge make the rounds. The photos all speak so many words. A slice in each one just waiting to be written (or not.) Thanks for sharing so many photos here.

    Very fun! Reminds me that teaching children to write is teaching them to be observers of the world. One of my favorite things regarding pictures is finding one to match the image in my head, to go with my blog posts. Often the image I find adds a new dimension to the writing that I hadn't expected - the power of pictures.

    More and more people on my FB feed have joined this challenge. It's an inclusive one that everyone enjoys doing. Back in my high school days I took B&W photos for the yearbook and had to develop them in a lab. How times have changed!

Whatever Happened To...

Sharing this post on Two Writing Teachers Slice of Life Do you ever wonder whatever happened to your students after the year you spend together? I imagine how my students are finding life...are they happy? Successful? Do they still read? Write? What is going on with them?   I taught fifth grade for eight years. Fifth grade was such a fun year to teach because the students were still young enough that school was something they loved and old enough that they could show some real signs of independence. Fifth grade is the oldest grade in our elementary schools, so the students enjoyed their final year before moving onto middle school and the challenges that came with that new adventure.  2007 was a tough year for me personally. My dad collapsed in September of that year and then died in March of that same school year. He lived thousands of miles away, so my mind was definitely unfocused that year...but that year, Catie was in my class.  Catie was a quiet stude...

Speaking for myself, I get so caught up in the everyday drudgery of life, that dreams get nudged aside until they disappear.  It's important to have dreams. I've been writing about my dreams in my notebook and so I thought I'd share my dreams here... 1.
