B-AM News Starts Right Now!

Morning Announcements. The communications classes I'm teaching have taken over the morning announcements or the news, as we call it.

I have a confession about this...I was nervous about it and kind of dreading it. I had no experience and no idea what to do or how to make it good. I'm so glad that I stuck with it because it's amazing!

How did we begin? We watched the news and talked about previous experiences with announcements and recording ourselves. We used FlipGrid almost every single class to get used to being on camera. We spent hours observing and rehearsing until the day we did it for real.

Communications is the last block of the day, so we record the news the day before and push it out to the classrooms the next morning. Students work in pairs or groups of threes. They get their assignment, their press pass, and they have a limited amount of time to record their segments. They search the building for the very best place to record.

It's been two weeks since we've gone live with our B-AM Newscast and it's been awesome! It's an entirely student-run production. They film, edit, and produce this three to four minute show every day. I've seen them engaged in learning more about the programs we're using. I've seen their creativity soar when they realize they can create new and original segments including: Joke of the Day; Weird, but True; Word of the Day; Quote of the Day; Things that Make You Go Hmmmm! There are more coming in 2018.

We have our own Youtube Channel called BAM Student News. We'd love it if you stopped by and watched. These middle school students are creating a legacy. They are sharing our story. I'm proud! Here's one of our student-created broadcasts...

  1. I look forward to B-AM News everyday. The shows are getting better and better everyday. I have said at least 4 times “that was the best one yet”! I am positive I’ll keep saying this. Ms. Haseltine, there is no doubt your positive, creative, and safe classroom environment is factor in the success of this show.
