Five Question Challenge

I was given this challenge by the amazing Peter Anderson. Here are his answers. I waited to respond so I could include this in the SOLC. Here are the five questions and my answers…

1. What has been your one biggest struggle this school year?
Finding time to get everything done.
2. Share two accomplishments that you are proud of this school year.
I’m proud of my students participating in Fine Arts Night reading their own original poetry. I’m proud of the connections they’ve made with our first grade blogging buddies in Ohio. (One more, I’m proud that one-third of my students stepped up to take the slice of life blogging challenge, where they blog every day for the month of March!)
3. What are three things you wish to accomplish before the end of the school year?
I want all of my students to call themselves readers and to have discovered the book that made them a reader. I want all of my students to recognize themselves as writers and to have written something they love. I want to be able to look back and see the close community we have created in my classroom.
4. Give four reasons why you remain in education despite today’s rough culture.
Students. Students. Students. Students. It may sound cliché but it’s the truth.
5. Which five people do you hope will take this challenge by answering these questions? Instead of naming people, I ask anyone who is interested to take this challenge.

    You don't need to look back to see the community you've created, Michelle, because you are living it every day! I am always in awe of your passion for teaching, your students, and literacy. : )

    Great questions and even better answers. I always enjoy hearing what you're doing in the classroom, know that your students are having a terrific learning year. And that's probably because it is the students that make us love the work. Your answers were clear about that!

    Hi Michelle, what a great slice. I agree with your answers to number 1 and number 4. I, too, would have to answer that my biggest struggle this year is that I don't have enough time to get everything done (I just left school at 7:00 pm this evening). Also, why do I remain in educatio? The students of course. And, I am changing the world by impacting the future - our kids!

    What a great slice and post to share! I just like many others love the answer to #4.... STUDENTS! That's the real reason why we are here, and sometimes it can be overshadowed by other things. I can't wait to read more about your students and classroom! :)

Whatever Happened To...

Sharing this post on Two Writing Teachers Slice of Life Do you ever wonder whatever happened to your students after the year you spend together? I imagine how my students are finding life...are they happy? Successful? Do they still read? Write? What is going on with them?   I taught fifth grade for eight years. Fifth grade was such a fun year to teach because the students were still young enough that school was something they loved and old enough that they could show some real signs of independence. Fifth grade is the oldest grade in our elementary schools, so the students enjoyed their final year before moving onto middle school and the challenges that came with that new adventure.  2007 was a tough year for me personally. My dad collapsed in September of that year and then died in March of that same school year. Storms

Last night there was a thunderstorm. It was loud. It was bright. The rain was pouring from the sky. Everything stopped. I sat in bed with all of the blinds opened and watched the flashing lightning paint the sky over and over and over again. The thunder boomed and my poor Bella ran under the bed. The rain poured and poured and poured.  I thought about how cleansing a storm can be. While it's happening, it can be scary...just ask my dog...but after it's over, I wake up and feel renewed. Maybe we need to storm sometimes too. Let it all out and see what's left and how it feels. I storm...on the pages my notebook. When I'm frustrated or worried or ecstatic, I open the pages and let it all out. The emotions paint the pages of my notebook...it's all left there. And after, I feel renewed. I breathe more deeply, think more clearly, and feel better. Without thunderstorms, what would spring be? Without writing, who would I be?  I have always been deeply connected to th...

Chasing My Dream

I'm doing it. I'm chasing my dream. I've always wanted to run writing retreats and workshops for people, but I've always been too scared to do anything about it...until now. I don't know what's changed...maybe I've changed. I'm not allowing the fear to stop me anymore. I've started Selah Writing Retreats.  The past couple of weeks I've been getting the business end in order. I thought I would hate that...I don't. It's scary, but I am surprising myself with how efficient I am. Yesterday I went to a bank to set up a bank account. The woman I met with was kind and helpful and so enthusiastic about my dream.
