Mixed Tapes & Playlists

Thank you to Stacey, Betsy, Dana, Tara, Beth, Anna, Kathleen & Deb for this amazing platform to write and share writing! What a wonderful community you've created! I'm honored to be part of it. Join us at Two Writing Teachers.

Music. I love music. Growing up we always listened to music. My mom loved the Beatles and lots of music from the sixties. We listened to that in the car. My dad love Billy Joel and John Denver and Barry Manilow...is that possible? Yes, that's what I remember. It's the sound track of my childhood.

As a teenager, I loved making mixed tapes. I'd spend hours picking the perfect songs and writing the titles on the cover and arranging them in exactly the way I wanted. I've always preferred listening to mixes that I made because it provided a variety of music that I loved!

Today the mixed tape has been replaced by the playlist. I have playlist after playlist on my iTunes. I have a playlist for school, one for mornings, one for working out, another for road trips. I've created one called, "A Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day Playlist" inspired by a favorite childhood story. I have a playlist of my favorite worship music and one called, "Sing Along", filled with songs I love.

I find my playlists need updating and changing every few months. In January I created a playlist titled, "2016". I'm adding songs that impact me greatly this year. The first song is titled, "Selah" which is my word this year. Here are some screenshots of my playlists.

  1. I love your playlists! I have my playlists, too. I love music so much, and I keep thinking I need to have music playing when my kids come into class in the morning, but it's hard to find the right songs. I think today I will work on my playlists:)

  3. I think you have touched a nerve with the children of a certain decade and the mixed tape! :) I love this post. We've been adding songs to our Spotify lists based on what we are hearing in the grocery store. (I'm not ashamed. I speak the truth.) Thanks for sharing this fun post!

  4. I love this post so much!! I have been writing a bit about my mom's playlist. In her last couple of years of life her vision failed. Music was something she connected with. My brother in law put together a playlist of her favorites. Over the years we added songs - new and old. It was always playing in her room. I now have it in my kitchen and find myself playing it all the time. Music is powerful in so many ways. Thank you for sharing this and pushing me to explore the "Grandma Peg" playlist some more in my writing.

  6. What a fun slice! I never thought about the peak we would get into someone's life by their playlist. I see a new side of you today. When I first read this, my thoughts immediately went to my mom and the music she played when ritualistically cleaning the house on Saturday mornings. She would always play Dean Martin and Johnny Mathis. Thank you for taking me down memory road - and possible giving me a slice idea.

  7. Music and art, books and writing - you are surrounded by beauty and light. Your playlists show how much you can create and influence the mood you are in. Enjoy the music!

  8. I, too, love creating playlists for different occasions! I think our playlists say a lot about who we are. :)

  9. I may have to return to try some of the songs I don't know, Michelle. I listen to lots of classical music, know some of your songs, but am way out of the loop in contemporary favorites. I love that you have playlists for different times and moods.I have an old cd that I sometimes play in the car of Louis Armstrong, just old songs and I love hearing him. Thanks for sharing so much!

  10. I love this little slice of music. Back in the day, I made those mix tapes too. Trying to press the record button to record from the radio at just the right time! Your playlists are stories in themselves. I love making playlists, but they are low on the priority list and take time to perfectly select each song. This provides me a start of inspiration!

  11. I love this!!! A personal goal this year was to add music to my classroom. My daughter helped me create a spotify account. Then my new school is organized by themes - 3rd grade is Atmosphere and my classroom is RAIN so she helped me make a RAIN playlist including "Singing in the Rain" and "Raindrops on Roses" and "Don't Rain on my Parade". I plan to study your lists and push myself to create more playlists!!

PS - My spring break is March 19-27...and I am staying in town. If you are around, maybe we can meet in person?!!

  12. We ARE so much alike! I was just thinking the other day when I turned on my music in my car -- "I need to make a mix CD...No, wait!....I can make a playlist!". Ha! I love your "Very Bad Day" mix. Mine's called Mellow Yellow. :)

  13. First, it's funny that you posted about your love of music and how your parents influenced you in this way because I was just getting ready to write a blog for tomorrow about something very similar!

Also, I love that you have Defying Gravity on your first playlist. I love that song! I am a classically trained singer and love how that song fits in my voice. I even did it for my school's talent show (as a teacher) a few years ago!

  14. Love your playlists!!! Such a great idea. I have so many CDs that are in my car from my high school and college years that sometimes I just love to listen to them when I'm having a bad day. I need to do some playlists on my computer though like you have done. I would love to know more about your one word and it's meaning. I always love to hear about people's choices in their OLW! :)

Whatever Happened To...

Sharing this post on Two Writing Teachers Slice of Life Do you ever wonder whatever happened to your students after the year you spend together? I imagine how my students are finding life...are they happy? Successful? Do they still read? Write? What is going on with them?   I taught fifth grade for eight years. Fifth grade was such a fun year to teach because the students were still young enough that school was something they loved and old enough that they could show some real signs of independence. Fifth grade is the oldest grade in our elementary schools, so the students enjoyed their final year before moving onto middle school and the challenges that came with that new adventure.  2007 was a tough year for me personally. My dad collapsed in September of that year and then died in March of that same school year. He lived thousands of miles away, so my mind was definitely unfocused that year...but that year, Catie was in my class.  Catie was a quiet stude...

Chasing My Dream

I'm doing it. I'm chasing my dream. I've always wanted to run writing retreats and workshops for people, but I've always been too scared to do anything about it...until now. I don't know what's changed...maybe I've changed. I'm not allowing the fear to stop me anymore. I've started Selah Writing Retreats.  The past couple of weeks I've been getting the business end in order. I thought I would hate that...I don't. It's scary, but I am surprising myself with how efficient I am. Yesterday I went to a bank to set up a bank account. The woman I met with was kind and helpful and so enthusiastic about my dream. My website is set up. I've done lots of work on it. I hope you stop by and let me know what you think. It's  selahwritingretreats.com . Balancing creative with business has been challenging but fun. Creating the website, getting a federal tax id, making business cards, planning dates... My favorite voxer group is called Butt Ki...

I Love Me...All of Me

I'm fat. It's true. I'm not looking for comments like, "Oh you're not fat." I am. I want to take that word back. When we say that now, it has a negative connotation. I'm tired of that. I'm done. I'm fat. I'm working on loving my body just the way it is...by reading a book. I confess I'm reading the book on my Kindle app because I was embarrassed about the title. It's called, "Things No One Will Tell Fat Girls" and it's written by Jes Baker . Her mission is self-love...for all. I've highlighted so many lines, I can't possibly share them all, but here are some of my favorites: "Our bodies are our physical bookmarks that hold space for us in the world. Our bodies are magnificent houses for everything else that we are. Our bodies are a part of us, just as our kindness, talents, and passion are a part of us." (p.10)  "Your size is irrelevant to your ability to find fulfillment, purpose, love, a se...
