Show Up

I don't feel like
writing today
but here I am,
I show up

I've missed
many days
I feel like
I've failed,
still
I show up

I've learned
that life is
messy,
unexpected,
hard, and
beautiful...
and the only
thing I must
do is this…

I show up.

Sharing an original poem everyday in the month of April.
Happy National Poetry Month!

  1. I called in,
    then cancelled,
    the Sub for today,
    dreading the writing of
    lesson plans of
    lines and stanzas
    and wondering about
    the theme and variation
    of the poem
I didn't want to have to write
    but did anyway.

    :)

  2. I
    got
    over
    writer's block
    by using this form
    it's easy, just count syllables.

    (I'm writing fibs today.)

    I'm glad you showed up.

Someday...

Thank you to Stacey, Betsy, Dana, Tara, Beth, Anna, Kathleen & Deb for this amazing platform to write and share writing! What a wonderful community you've created! I'm honored to be part of it. Join us at Two Writing Teachers . Do you have dreams? Kids are good at dreaming. I find many adults struggle with it. Speaking for myself, I get so caught up in the everyday drudgery of life, that dreams get nudged aside until they disappear.  It's important to have dreams. I've been writing about my dreams in my notebook and so I thought I'd share my dreams here... 1. Writing a book.  While I'd love to get a book published, my dream is to write a book...to complete the act of writing it.  I've started on this dream and it's hard and challenging and exciting and amazing.  2. Living at the beach.    I love the water, the waves, the ocean smell, the seafood, the sand...all of it! The Outer Banks is my favorite place in the...

What is Your Sentence?

Thank you to Stacey, Betsy, Dana, Tara, Beth, Anna, Kathleen & Deb for this amazing platform to write and share writing! What a wonderful community you've created! I'm honored to be part of it. Join us at Two Writing Teachers . Today we took our writing notebooks out to write a sentence. Just a sentence.  What is your sentence? I stumbled upon this amazing video from Daniel Pink's book, Drive.  I asked my sixth graders this question. We decided that we'd like to see some examples, so I shared a couple of other videos with mentors of this sentence.  We analyzed their sentences. We noticed that the sentences were written in the third person. We noticed that the sentences were written as if these things had already happened. We got lost in their words.  It's time to write our own. We spent five minutes writing and rewriting our sentence. We added details. We rearranged words. We tried out new ideas. We shared. After a few students share...

A Poem of Slices

As I was reading posts a few days ago, I came across this post titled, Slicing Titles Make a Poem . I was intrigued and immediately I thought this would make a great last day post! Rereading through the titles made me smile. I'd already forgotten some. In my work to create a poem, I tried to keep the titles very true to form. I added three words to the entire poem. For me, the revision was mostly about moving around and making the lines fit together. I had fun revising and creating this poem. Here it is...
