Traveling Joy
Good Morning. I'm writing this post as I sit in the terminal at Dulles Airport waiting for a flight to take me to All Write...I feel like John Green. (If you watch any Vlogbrothers videos, you'll get that! He often posts videos from airports.)
Traveling is not my favorite thing, certainly not traveling by plane. It stresses me out, so why did I name this post, Traveling Joy? I've been struck by people today and the joy I've seen expressed and shared.
1. The man on the phone with me at 4:00 in the morning straightening out my travel arrangements that had been drastically changed overnight. He was patient. He was kind. He was helpful. Customer service for an airline must be a difficult job and I felt like I could hear the smile in his voice as he helped me.
2. Parents traveling with young children. Oh parents, how do you do it? I was behind a mother in line with an energetic three year old girl at security, and she (the mother) was patient and smiling. There were parents with an infant and a toddler walking to the terminal. Their little girl kept lagging behind. Her eyes lit up when she saw the moving sidewalk. She jumped on. I smiled and commented to the little girl, "Boy, you're going fast now." The dad stopped, smiled at me and said, "Thank you". JOY while traveling with young children...I don't know how they do it.
3. The woman working at the burger place in the terminal. All I wanted to eat was a plain bagel. Au Bon Pan was out, so I walked across the hall to the burger place that was serving breakfast. I ordered a plain bagel, not toasted. The woman smiled at me and quietly suggested that I go across the way and get it. She showed me such kindness in helping me. She got my business.
4. As I sat and nibbled on my bagel, I heard a loud voice. It was coming from a store that sells electronics and the man who worked there was one of those guys...you know, one of those people who LOVES their job. He was animated and friendly and funny!
5. Finally, I started to gather my trash to throw away and move towards my gate, as a woman pushing a trash can walked over to me, smiled and motioned for me to throw away my trash. She brought the trash can to me. She had a lovely smile on her face.
There's so many lessons to learn from these interactions. JOY can be found anywhere. Be open. Look for it. Be ready to accept it. I'm sure there will be some bumps on the trip, but today...traveling's not so bad.

A smile does a long way to make connections. I love watching people in airports, but I agree with you: I don;t know how parents travel with young children. It seems like an insurmountable task, and yet, they do it with grace.
ReplyDeleteHooray I am going to All Write too!! I appreciate how you find JOY in the harder situations in life. Hopefully our paths will cross see you Indiana :)
ReplyDeleteMichelle, I love this post. As I read this, I kept thinking that the joy is really coming from you, not the people around you. The way you spoke kindly to the young girl on the moving sidewalk, the way you appreciated the airline's customer service employee... you are not only noticing the joy, but then spreading it through your actions and, now, your words.
ReplyDeleteSee you tomorrow at All Write!
Hopefully you did not find any bumps on this trip! I didn't realize you were flying in today. I am sure by the time you read this, you will already be there - so hope you had a great flight. Can't wait to see you tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteAnd you will have even more JOY at the All Write conference. Boy am I envious!
ReplyDeleteYou certainly have found the JOY in this journey! (which also happens to be the theme of All Write this year )
ReplyDeleteSafe travels, and I look forward to meeting you!!!
ReplyDeleteI love your reminder to find JOY everywhere. It is there, and I need to be reminded of this. I'm so jealous of your trip to All Write. I can't make it this year, but it is such a treat.
ReplyDeleteSo love hearing the joy you notice. I love traveling & notice all the different people wherever I go. Happy travels to that fabulous conference, Michelle. I will miss it, have been there the past 3 years. Can't believe now you're going & I'm not! Someday?
ReplyDeleteI love how you find joy in every day. I'll be doing some huge traveling this weekend. I am going to Africa! Remember the mother-in-law who was in so much pain last summer. Well, this year she is taking me to Africa! I keep waking up at 4 AM worrying. I know it's going to be great. But I haven't been able to tell my subconscious yet.
ReplyDeleteHave a great time at All Write!
Joy in everyday. I'm a huge believer in this. Smiles go a long way, and I think this is so important right now. Blessings on your travels. Have a great time at All Write.
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited for your destination Michelle. It is worth all the crazy airport stuff ( a world unto itself ). Looking forward to your learning and writing experience at All Write.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great mindset you have. Open to the possibility of joy and not dwelling on the past experiences of travel. I hope you have a wonderful time at the conference. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful way to begin your trip. You're going to have an awesome time! enJOY!
ReplyDeleteJoy certainly finds you, Michelle - that's the kind of person you are. Enjoy All Write...blog about it!
ReplyDeleteMichelle, this is a very joyful post and to think it all happened in an airport. I actually had a pleasant trip back from Louisville for the Wonder Lead Ambassadors Retreat even though flying is not on my top ten list. Enjoy the conference and send home many tweets.
ReplyDeleteI love reading this post and reading comments from all the folks who'll be at All Write. Linda and I took a very scenic route from the airport to the conference last year, but we talked every moment and enjoyed our journey. Have a fabulous time and keep those pics coming. And then the tweets. And after that the blog posts. I'm off to my niece's wedding in the morning. Not looking forward to the heat, but I'll look for the joy in our time together.
