Road Trips


What is it about taking a road trip? As a kid, I wasn't crazy about long car rides. They were boring and I fought with my sister about where we were sitting in the back seat and sometimes I got car sick. As an adult, if I am within driving distance, I prefer driving over flying. Long car rides mean discovering new places. Road trips give me a sense of possibility. I love the potential for getting lost, although I don't always love getting lost. I love when I find my own way and get to a new place. This weekend I drove from Virginia to Ohio. I'd never been to Ohio before, so this was an adventure. I confess that driving over the mountains was my least favorite part, but I can look back and say I did it. I kept remembering these words from the television show, "This is Us"...


I rolled down the windows and cranked up the music and drove. I feel like each road trip changes me a tiny bit...makes me a little braver and reminds me to see the world beyond my own. Can't wait for my next road trip! Where do you like to go?

    I am glad you enjoyed your road trip even if you began with a bit of hesitation. The quote, well, it's perfect! And, I adore the show too. Where would I like to go? I've been ready to go back and visit the big apple. It's been awhile since I've been there and fortunately in the car it's not that far away.

    Oh, the blue skies in your first picture are inspiring and tempting. It is exciting to know that there are still adventures to be had as an adult.

    When I was growing up, my family always drove for vacations. I always had to sit in the front seat because I got car sick. Nevertheless, fun memories. I love listening to podcast on road trips. I'll be driving home from New Orleans today and thinking of this post.

    Before I became a teacher, I drove everyday for my job. I loved it! It always gave me time to think through my day before it started and reflect on it on the way home. I heard so many great things about the Dublin conference! I am sure your presentation was great!

    I love road trips--it's part of why I am looking forward to retirement. My husband, Chloe and I can take off whenever we want and explore the open road!

    Oh, be still my heart...William. I hated that you were in my neck of the woods at the best literacy conference ever - Dublin Lit, and I didn't go this year. :-( I was so bummed I missed out on hearing Kwame and seeing everyone. However, I had a great weekend with my girls (Katie turned 21!!!), so that can't be replaced. I hated road trips as a kid, too. Ha. But now they can be fun!

Someday...

Chasing My Dream

I'm doing it. I'm chasing my dream. I've always wanted to run writing retreats and workshops for people, but I've always been too scared to do anything about it...until now. I don't know what's changed...maybe I've changed. I'm not allowing the fear to stop me anymore. I've started Selah Writing Retreats.  The past couple of weeks I've been getting the business end in order. I thought I would hate that...I don't. It's scary, but I am surprising myself with how efficient I am. Yesterday I went to a bank to set up a bank account. The woman I met with was kind and helpful and so enthusiastic about my dream.
