Write Every Day

"Every day.
I will write every single day.
There's a lot to say.
Every single day."
-I committed to writing here every day during break.

How is it that it's only day three and I've already run out of ideas? I know the answer. It's easy. I'm out of practice. I believe writing takes practice. I don't believe in writer's block.

Writer's block is like getting a cramp when you're running. It doesn't mean you've forgotten how to run. It doesn't mean you give up. It means you have to breathe through it. The more you run, the farther you can go. Writing is like that.

I haven't been showing up to this space. I'm out of practice. If I left or gave up, it wouldn't help, in fact, it would make things harder the next time I tried.

Show up. Write. Write even when there's nothing to say. Write even when it's crummy. Just write. This is how writers work. They write through the bad times and every once in a while, a golden line sneaks it's way through and it's just enough to remind the writer why she's writing.

I'll continue to show up. I'll continue to write and share.

  1. You so often write what I need to read! I gave up my daily writing weeks ago (first as I was busy applying for next year's job, then because I was busy writing reports), but now it is time to get back on track and eek, it is day 4 of break and today is my first day writing again. While I will not publish daily I will write daily from here on (at least during break and hopefully beyond- I feel better when I write!).

  2. Michelle, I'm so glad to see you back! I love your analogy comparing running and writing and the idea of breathing through the tough times. (In so many ways, it all comes down to breathing, doesn't it?) I hope you're having a wonderful break. I'm slightly horrified that we aren't out until the end of the day on Friday. Happy writing!

  4. I like your analogy of writing and getting a cramp as a runner. Since I am teaching reading this year, I've been more focused on my reading life. Thanks for the reminder to keep working on my writing life too. Have a lovely holiday! I'll be in touch. I'd love to cross paths in the new year. As you predicted, I LOVE MIDDLE SCHOOL!!! SO glad you demonstrated for me how fun it is!!

  5. Gently and firmly return to the habit of .... you can finish this sentence with "blogging," some others may insert a different word. You have writing inside you so deeply that even if you tried you wouldn't be able to stop writing. Little breaks are ok. Longer breaks are ok too. Returning is fun. Happy Writing!

  10. It's easy to make excuses, harder to to find the inspiration. I often find myself taking breaks, but always glad to return.
