Exploring the Word TURN in My Spiritual Journey

Thank you to Holly for this amazing opportunity to explore my Spiritual Journey every week! I love the opportunity to try on each other's OLWs. This week I've been contemplating Leigh Anne's word TURN.

TURN. I looked up the definition. It means to move or to change. TURN is one of those words that means so many different things and I think that's why I love it so much. Ever since Leigh Ann picked it, I've noticed it popping up.

I heard the President start the State of the Union with it, "...tonight, we TURN the page." It's a word I never paid attention to and now I think about it a lot.

"TURN to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other." Isaiah 45:22
TURNing toward is opening up and asking for help.

My favorite meaning of the word TURN is TURNing it over to God. Here's a great verse that addresses that! "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6-7

I struggle with TURNing things over to God. I grasp so tightly and try to control everything until I can't...until I fail...until I TURN to God and let Him take over. TURNing it over to God is an act of faith. I love thinking about this and remembering this and re-focusing on this course in the middle of such a busy week! Thank you Leigh Anne for picking such a terrific word!

  1. It IS a great word, TURN. The fact that God asks us to TURN everything over to Him is such a gift. I wonder why it is SO hard. When we do, He takes care of everything so beautifully, and yet, we resist again and again and fill our hearts with anxiety. We definitely need to TURN our hearts over to Him so he can fill them with peace.

  2. Michelle, I think that our failing is a stepping stone to success if we are reflective and take action. As you said,"until I turn to God and let Him take over." How many times do I need to realize that God is the director of my life and not me.

  3. Turning does require faith, trust that God's got our backs. We can be more confident moving forward when we know He's there.

  4. Like you, I love that there are many ways to think about Leigh Anne's word, turn. And my favorite words from your post - "TURNing it over to God is an act of faith," good things to ponder in the midst of a busy week.

  5. Michelle, I can so identify with your struggles! At times it feels like I need to first fail before I will turn things over to God. I wonder where this stubbornness comes from...??? But here we are, encouraging each other to keep turning to Him! Great community!

  6. I so agree that turning things over to Him is so hard. That darn control thing! I love this perspective of my word. Thank you for sharing in my word this week and I apologize for taking so long to read all of the posts!

Whatever Happened To...

Sharing this post on Two Writing Teachers Slice of Life Do you ever wonder whatever happened to your students after the year you spend together? I imagine how my students are finding life...are they happy? Successful? Do they still read? Write? What is going on with them?   I taught fifth grade for eight years. Fifth grade was such a fun year to teach because the students were still young enough that school was something they loved and old enough that they could show some real signs of independence. Fifth grade is the oldest grade in our elementary schools, so the students enjoyed their final year before moving onto middle school and the challenges that came with that new adventure.  2007 was a tough year for me personally. My dad collapsed in September of that year and then died in March of that same school year. He lived thousands of miles away, so my mind was definitely unfocused that year...but that year, Catie was in my class.  Catie was a quiet stude...

Storms

Last night there was a thunderstorm. It was loud. It was bright. The rain was pouring from the sky. Everything stopped. I sat in bed with all of the blinds opened and watched the flashing lightning paint the sky over and over and over again. The thunder boomed and my poor Bella ran under the bed. The rain poured and poured and poured.  I thought about how cleansing a storm can be. While it's happening, it can be scary...just ask my dog...but after it's over, I wake up and feel renewed. Maybe we need to storm sometimes too. Let it all out and see what's left and how it feels. I storm...on the pages my notebook. When I'm frustrated or worried or ecstatic, I open the pages and let it all out. The emotions paint the pages of my notebook...it's all left there. And after, I feel renewed. I breathe more deeply, think more clearly, and feel better. Without thunderstorms, what would spring be? Without writing, who would I be?  I have always been deeply connected to th...

Mid-Winter Blahs!

Sharing my slice of life (#sol14) over at  Two Writing Teachers.    Please join us! I didn't want to post today because it hasn't been a good day. Normally, I'd post first thing in the morning, but I woke up sick. Pushed myself to go to school and UGH, I shouldn't have. Now, I feel sick and I'm tired. I kept working on making today better...it didn't happen.  Complaining is not something I like to do. One of my first grade teacher friends used to say, "Don't spread your bad feelings around!" I hear her voice in my ear as I type this! I'm sorry, but I feel like there's no energy for anything else. Soon, I'll take more medicine and get into bed early and stop spreading my bad feelings around...finally. Hoping your Tuesday was better than mine!
